Olympic Swimming Qualifying Procedure

FINA has updated the Swimming qualifying procedures for 2012 Olympics.

The qualifying system now posted on the FINA website is dated from November 2011 (updated from February 2011).

The majority of the changes between the two posts deal with specifying how swimmers will be ranked for invitations to the Games, for those entering the Olympics either via the Universality spots or via an OST qualification.

Changes to the qualifying system for Swimming posted with this November 2011 update are:

  • 900 swimmers will now be competition in Swimming. This is up from 850 (the 50 swimmers for the 10K events are no longer part of the pool total).
  • Universality: Times will be ranked by the 2012 FINA points. The 150 spots open for Universality will be split evenly between males and females (75 males, 75 females); if there are not 75 of one gender, spots may be allocated to the other gender.
  • Swimmers with an Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT, “A” standard), may also swim other events in which they have achieved the Olympic Selection Time (OST, the “B” standard) or faster. [Note: For a country to enter 2 swimmers in an event, both swimmers still need to have both swum an OQT in the event.]
  • Relays: Nations must include the swimmer names for their relays when they confirm their intent to the swim relays. For relays that qualified via the 2011 Worlds (top-12), the confirmation due date is May 31, 2012. For those relays qualifying by time outside of the 2011 Worlds, the confirmation deadline is June 11, 2012.
  • OST ordering for invitations: Swimmers qualified with OSTs will invited by event rank, with the top-ranked person in each individual event being invited in rounds (so 26 at a time, one from each individual event). When adding 26 exceeds the 900 total spots for Swimming, the group of 26 that includes those that goes over 900 will be ordered by their FINA points and invited up to the point of the 900th swimmers.
  • The qualifying period for swimming OQTs or OSTs now ends on June 18, 2012. For OQTs this is a change from July 3, 2012 (i.e. 2 weeks less); for OSTs this is a change from June 1, 2012. Relay qualifying and Universality qualification remains at June 1, 2012 [Note: This date change partially was mentioned in the December 2, 2011 WSCA news.]

The November-2011 update to the qualifying system for the 2012 Olympics can be found on the FINA website here: www.fina.org/H2O/docs/events/london2012/sw/sw_qual.pdf
